Ziggy Marley & Burning Spear

Reggae icons Ziggy Marley and Burning Spear are set to perform at The Backyard in Sacramento, Thursday, October 16, as part of their Do The Reggae Tour. The tour also includes a stop at another Nederlander Concerts-operated venue Vina Robles Amphitheatre in Paso Robles, Calif.

Ziggy Marley is a nine-time Grammy winner, Emmy winner, musician, producer, activist and humanitarian who has cultivated a legendary career for close to 40 years. After two decades as the driving creative force behind the Melody Makers, a band he formed with his siblings, Ziggy’s first solo tour came in Summer 2002 where he released his first album. Ziggy has hewed his own path as a musical pioneer, infusing the reggae genre with funk, blues, rock and other elements through mindful songcraft. Equal parts master storyteller and motivational guide, he deftly explores issues from environmental awareness to self-empowerment, social injustice to political inequity, while returning again and again to the transformative power of love.

Since 2017, Marley has been the lead producer and force behind the Bob Marley: One Love biopic released February 14, 2024, breaking Valentine’s Day box office release records. The film was heralded as reviving box offices following the writer / actor strikes and is quickly becoming one of the top grossing music biopics of all time.

Paramount to his music and entertainment focus, Marley transforms his success to champion political and philanthropic causes. Ziggy initially served as a Goodwill Youth Ambassador for the United Nations and participated in Bob Marley Foundation initiatives worldwide.  He later expanded his ambitions by founding his own charity, U.R.G.E. (Unlimited Resources Giving Enlightenment), a non-profit organization whose mission ranges from building new schools to operating health clinics, supporting beneficiaries including Food for the Poor, Health Care International, the Chepstowe Basic School in Jamaica and HOLA (Heart of Los Angeles). Burning Spear’s impact on reggae music is profound. A true legend, Spear’s legacy through his music is one of self-reliance and self-determination for the African diaspora. Also known as Winston Rodney, his career spans over six decades. Burning Spear has won two Grammy Awards for Best Reggae Album; one at the 42nd Grammy Awards in 2000 for “Calling Rastafari,” and one for 2009’s “Jah Is Real.” He has been nominated for a total of 12 Grammy™ Awards. He was awarded the Jamaican government’s Order of Distinction for outstanding services to music in 2007. Burning Spear’s legacy as a reggae legend is everlasting, and his music continues to inspire and uplift audiences around the world. His influence can be heard in the work of countless artists who have followed in his footsteps, and his message of love and unity remain as relevant today as ever.
