The Original Pilipino Music Hitmakers
Event Details
This Springtime,Starmedia Entertainment will bring Filipino OPM legends Rico J. Puno, Marco Sison Rey Valera and Hajji Alejandro in the US.
The concert, entitled “OPM The Hitmakers,” will be standard for the four gentlemen icons of Filipino hit songs to serenade Filipinos in America.
The Hitmakers. Rico J. Puno, Marco Sison Rey Valera and Hajji Alejandro have been singing individually for over 30 years but in the last half decade have shared the stage together in numerous concert performances and in the process have “owned” the title of “Hitmakers,” and rightfully so.
Rico J. Puno. He is best known as a pioneer-promoter of Filipino music, well before the term “OPM” or Original Pilipino Music was even coined. He started the trend of incorporating Tagalog lyrics in American hit songs the most popular of which was his rendition of the medley “Try to Remember/The Way We Were” ala Gladys Knight and the Pips. His countless hits include “Kapalaran,” “Buhat,” “Macho Guwapito,” “Damdamin,” “May Bukas Pa,” “Ang Tao'y Marupok,” “Magkasuyo Buong Gabi,” “Kartada 10,” and “Lupa” (the Philippine entry he interpreted at the 1979 Tokyo Music Festival). Rico is known as the Total Entertainer combining artistic wit and comedy with his passionate singing style. Through the years, no one has quite been able to duplicate Rico J’s inimitable style that not only had catapulted him to hitmaker-dom but helped shaped original Filipino music the way we know it today.
Marco Sison. With his drop-dead good looks and subtle demeanor, Marco Sison is the ultimate balladeer that women of all ages just can’t help but swoon over. The 14-week undefeated champion of a popular noontime singing competition (“Student Canteen”) was just the door-opener, a beginning for the baritone crooner simply destined to be a star. His crooning ala Matt Monroe was so irresistible that by the time his first album was launched in 1991, Marco Sison was already a household name. His unforgettable hits include “My Love Will See You Through,” “I’ll Face Tomorrow,” “Make Believe,” “Always,” “Isusumbong Kita sa Diyos,” “Ibigay Mo Sa Akin Ang Bukas,” “Mahal” and the campy, swinging ditty “Si Aida, O Si Lorna, O Si Fe” which made Marco the certified hitmaker he is today.
"Hajji" Alejandro is a Filipino singer and actor, who was a major pop star in the 1970s and 1980s. Just like another OPM legend Basil Valdez, he came from the group Circus Band. He was the first winner of the Metro Manila Popular Music Festival .Dubbed the "kilabot ng mga kolehiyala" (college girls' heartthrob), Alejandro is best remembered for such songs as "Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika", "Panakíp Butas" and "Nakapagtataka".
Rey Valera is a well-known singer, songwriter, music director, film scorer and television host from the Philippines. He wrote and produced songs that were recorded by various singers, most notably Sharon Cuneta. He is currently the head judge of the singing contest segment "Tawag ng Tanghalan" in a variety noontime show It's Showtime.
